Fargo West Literacy Program
Students and Rotarians Learning, Sharing and Reading
Each year Fargo West Rotarians volunteer their time at Carl Ben Eielsen Middle School in Fargo and read with our foreign students. The kids are often immigrants from many foreign nations. Their families have come to America seeking a better life. The students are enrolled in school and one of their classes is ELL (English as a Learning Language).
Our Rotarians take the months of December, January and February and attend ELL class every Friday morning for one to two hours. They work one-on-one with the ELL students, playing games, speaking, making introductions, doing worksheets on language and most importantly reading.
This year we worked with 9 students who came from a variety of foreign countries. Twenty -two of our Fargo West Rotarians participated and volunteered. The best part is we Rotarians gain much more in friendship and good will than what we give in volunteer time. The rewards make ELL a positive experience for all!
